I have always believed that the best type of education is the one that is student-centered, not teacher-centered; meaning, that teachers are not the only sole providers of knowledge, but should serve as channels by which to conduct effective education. Recently, one of my students, reminded me of a very valuable lesson:
We are all born with weaknesses; yet, it is in our power to overcome those weaknesses to become better human beings.
Taking this concept into consideration, if we have been able to struggle against one of our weaknesses and arise victorious, of course it will be a great theme to discuss in one of the college-application essays. What personal qualities would this show? Most definitely, determination, perseverance, analytical skills, and acceptance of a situation in order to improve it.
My advice would be:
- Focus on the aspect of being born with it (not having acquired it over time).
- Draft a list of how this weakness has impaired you from achieving certain things.
- Follow with an analysis of how you have realized the situation, taken control of it, and changed your course of action to yield better results.
I am sure you will end up with a terrific college application essay!
