Remember how I have commented on how I view life through connections?
Today I was in my Pilates class and the instructor said I should “grab the bar with my toes as if I were a parakeet.” Of course I was able to relate to her cue because I see parakeets all the time around where I live. I started to think, what would have happened if she gave me that cue and I had lived most of my life in a place that was not so tropical and with few parakeets. Would I have been able to connect as well with the instruction?
Now you might be thinking, and how does this relate to college applications? Well, it does in fact relate effectively. By getting to know my students through Personal Strategies Questionnaires, I am able to get to know their background. By learning about this, I am able to give them better cues for when they are writing their essays so that they can really bring out that amazing description and make it come to life for the admissions officers that will read their essays.
And that is the power behind connections! One thought is linked to another and another, which yields a well thought out essay that will leave who ever reads it, feeling as if they know you; feeling as if they know how you think and where you come from.
