Launching this web site has been on my to-do-list for years. Now that I am starting to experience the “empty nest” syndrome, I decided it was the perfect time to embark on this new journey. Finding a name for my Instagram and web site was not easy, since I have always had trouble with my name while living in Latin America. I was born in New York City, New York and named after one of my parent’s friends: Kathryn. Shortly after, my parents moved to Panama and then to Costa Rica, where I grew up. I have heard so many versions of my name mispronounced that sometimes I even forgot what it was supposed to sound like. When I got married and moved to Panama, I thought my struggles with my name were over. People nicknamed me Kathy and I adopted my husband’s name: Icaza. So, I have been known as Kathy de Icaza for some time. However, as years have passed by, I have started to make peace with my name again and I have started loving it. Now, I think it is actually beautiful and perfect: seven letters in each name. That is why, even if some might find a challenge in looking me up on Instagram or finding my website, I feel my name embodies everything I am.

My mother is Panamanian and my father is from the United States. My father used to sing to me nursery rhymes when I was little and I actually think I must have learned how to speak English before Spanish. When I graduated from high school, I pursued my undergraduate studies in the United States, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in International Business. Later on, I pursued a Master’s degree in Education from a US university, while living in Panama. I have loved working in the world of education, as a Development and Human Resource Manager and as a Literature and Writing teacher. For the past ten years, I have been working independently as an Educational Consultant, devoting most of my time to College Counseling. My greatest joy as an educator is being able to open the door for my students so that they can have a brighter future, hoping that during the process, they can find a better version of themselves and show that to the world. I believe the counseling experience is not only finding the college that fits them best, but also about helping them find everything that is great about them and presenting it in the best possible way. I also enjoy immensely reading their essays at the end, which for me, are all works of art.

I love what I do and that is important. I also love that I had the time to watch my two children grow up to be amazing human beings. My daughter and my son are my pride and joy, and now, even if it is from a distance, I am proud to see them experience this new part of their lives. I hope that my students will leave my counseling or workshops filled with a new energy and a new vitality to face the challenges and chaos this world presents us with.
